Monopolies and Mergers Commission
The statutory body in the United Kingdom which is responsible for investigating mergers and takeovers in the UK to ensure that they are not against the public interest, which is usually defined in terms of the impact of the merger on competition in the relevant sector. The MMC will investigate a merger at the instigation of the President of the Board of Trade and will make a recommendation to the President of the Board of Trade as to whether the merger should be cleared or blocked.
